Could Buckley’s taste worse…Oh Yea!!
It would seems impossible to make the Canadian iconic brand of Buckley’s Cough medicines taste any worse than they already do. However, the folks at Novartis Consumer Healthcare Canada have managed to do just that, and make Buckley’s even more effective than it is already!
When trying to describe Buckley’s to folks that have never tried it, I tell them that the taste of Buckley’s would be like; what I think eating liquid tree bark would kinda taste like. It has Camfor, Pine Needle Oil, Menthol, and Canada Balsam in it. This stuff is pretty bad tasting. And yet, it has a following that is incredible and very much cult like; with the predominant feeling; that it really works!!
I have always said that it works for me because it “scares the s$#t our of my cold”! It scares my body and mind so much that it goes into “speedy recovery” because of the fear of being “on” Buckley’s for a long period of time. LOL!!!
So what is this post really about; outside of the fact that I do think this is a unique brand and that it does seem to work for me? I wrote this because I was laughing the other day while watching someone grab a bottle off the shelf of the new Buckley’s Mucous Formula. I just thought to myself, “Wow, and you thought it tasted bad before, just wait!!”
If Buckley’s does not have enough “stuff” in it to taste pretty “interesting”, Novartis decides to kick it up a bit and add another brutal tasting active called; guaifenesin. Native Americans used similar medicines derived from the guaiac tree as a general treatment of ailments. Today, Guaifenesin is an over the counter drug that is used as an expectorant to assist in bringing “up” phlegm and mucous. Trust me, that sounds as bad as it tastes!
I had to write something quick on this product, not because the addition of Guaifenesin is unique to this brand or product line only. Guaifensin has been used since the mid 50’s for the above reasons and has been added to cough and cold meds for years. What makes this worthy of a blog post, to me anyway, is the fact that this pretty brutal tasting additive is in a product that is already seriously challenged with taste! The best part, this is going to be a very successful addition to the Buckley’s line up and will continue the love affair with Buckley’s users and the god awful taste of Buckley’s!
I love brands like this! They have the ability to take a pretty significant negative and really spin it into a positive!
I would love for you to share some of your experiences with Buckley’s with me, and I am sure Novartis, I am pretty sure they will monitor this post.
Good luck this cough and cold season, and remember, if you want to scare a cough and cold away – try Buckley’s!
