#YVRTwestival 2010 – How was it!?
Went to my first real “social media outing” last night in Vancouver @CBCVancouver Head Office at Georgia and Hamilton.
The event was pretty kool. Good wines from local wineries of @TinHornCreek @HesterCreek @Road13Vineyards and great sushi from @michisushi . Wine was really reasonable so you got to sample a little red or white. Just nice!!
Outside of venue and menu – couple of things that stood out for me at the event were; things that I thought were kool: the amount of tweeting going on the amount of strangers in the room!
Let me explain.
First off; any event that actually encourages and almost promotes the overuse of today’s technology, is ok with me! It is a pretty interesting dynamic and honestly, very different for me.
At this moment I am writing this from a beautiful hotel room just outside of Tucson Arizona. I am getting ready to head out for dinner with 250 or so folks and I am leaving my iPhone behind. This is an old fashioned event in that we are going to mingle and talk face to face with people. Most I know, and most know me. Last night, I found myself not doing so much talking to anyone in general and for sure not “working the room” like I would normally. It was quite comfortable and even OK to be on the cell, tweeting and communicating that way. It was awesome. I still met a lot of people, just in a very different way.
Secondly, it was funny to be in a room with so many people that appeared to be strangers to each other. OK, obviously, many people did know each other, I know; however many did not. I could tell that by the way people walked to room. There was a lot of “chest staring” going on. Not in a bad way!!! You could see many faces light up as people bumped into each other and by looking at the their “twitter names”, people were saying; “Hey, I know you! I follow you!” I chuckled as this went on for much of the evening; and yes, me included!!
The most fun for me was hanging with my @londondrugs crew! I hung out with @wayneracine , @wendyhartley , and @cynnamonS . We had a great time, our new little London Drugs Social Media Team!! I really enjoy their company and I love their passion to these new mediums!
We also got to have some fun and participate in a little “self promotion” and a little “corporate promotion” We managed to get a @genuinehealth gift basket that we could raffle off, a Canon camera to raffle off (won by @tagga) and we played a little “London Drugs Amazing Race” with some @londondrugs giftcards!!
Thanks to the following for making this event happen. I know I am missing a tonne of people and volunteers, but these are the ones I know. Thanks to @miss604 @amuseconsulting @michisushi @mojaveband and @cbcvancouver
Great evening and a lot of fun!!
Ciao for now. Yours truly @kootenayborn
