Is it Social Media or Social Networking? Does it matter?
What does it mean to be “online”, “connected”, and or “engaged”?
I guess both of those questions or queries really depend on you.
I think, for a lot of the people I know that are “not” participating in the many social mediums of today, its either one of those “titles or names” attached, that may be dissuading them, or its the sounds of the latter 3 descriptive words that are feaking them out.
Social Media sounds kinda techy, involved, or maybe just “too much”! It may overwelm some. It just sounds so encompassing. I am “involved in”, or “participate in” social media. That can sound like tonne of work with a huge time commitment attached. I know this is a typical reaction of many of my friends, who maybe are not participating as much as I am in the “new(ish)” online world.
If you say “Social Networking”, this definitely sounds like a lot of work to those same friends. “How do you find all that time to talk to people, do facebook and twitter, and write blog, and…? You get the picture.
If those two,all encompassing labels that we have attached to this new communication world, don’t freak them out, then for sure the online, connected, and engaged words will! Those really do sound like they take a lot of time and energy! Where and when do you rest?
So what is it? What do you call it? How do you label it?
Maybe you don’t call it anything new. Maybe we just use some of the “old” nomenclature and just say that we are going to “hang out” on Twitter, “call up some old buddies” on Linkedin, “catch up” with the friends on Facebook, enter a few thoughts in my e-journal (my blog) or chillax at the itunes store….. Call it whatever you want. Does it matter, and is it really that important?
I think it is important. I would really love to get more of my friends and family “online” so that we can connect and/or reconnect. I think the naming, mostly for marketing and branding reasons, is what has caused many of the issues with many folks my age signing on.
We know that the fastest growing segment on facebook today is the 55 . We know that most that are 35 and younger are on most mediums, less Twitter, they dont seem to hangout there as much. We know that many women and younger moms (say 25 to 40) use facebook and will frequent blogs regularly. Obviously these are pretty general and broad statements and really encompass more of what I am seeing, within my circle of friends and my work experience.
The most challanged group seems to be mine. That mid to later 40’s. Tech savvy, but somewhat reluctant to participate hard in any of the mediums. Not syaing we are not on, but we dont seem to domnate anyone particular segment. I some times think thay this could be as a result of labeling and naming issues that we discuss above. The perception of this huge time constraint just seems to loom heavy over my friends. I hear that all of the time. So, what do you do?
Something to think more about later, as for now, the pool area is getting hot, there is no WIFI for me sign on to to post this, I could use another Pinot Grigio, I am a tad hungry, and our wine tour guide is summoning us to leave Sonoma Fairmont for our first tour of the day! OMG! Life is tough in Sonoma. When and where do I find for this Social Media thing! So many distractions!
I hope you enjoy your day as much as I am going to enjoy mine!
Ciao for now @kootenayborn
