Motrin, Motrin, Motrin – what were you thinking?!
This is one of the Social Media campaigns that we talked about many times over the last 2 days at the Open Dialogue conference entitled ” Marketing to Digital Moms – Interacting & Engaging Today’s Techmamas”.
This appears to be destined to be a “classic” blunder!
The Motrin commercial is more of a classic “not understanding” of who your target market is and how they will react! Most likely an example of “men” writing ads that are be marketed to women and / or Mom’s.
It showed J&J, and many others, the speed that today’s consumers have when it comes to talking about their displeasure with Brands and Ad Campaigns. It also showed that if you do not monitor the “Social Media World” on a regular basis and talk to, and engage your consumers, you can get into BIG trouble!
This ad was launched on a Friday in November of 2008 and was pulled on the following Monday in 2008 after many Mom’s got really, really, really upset and angry with the way J&J described Mom’s carrying their babies. Mom’s went viral on that weekend to the point where mainstream media published the activity in the newspapers that Monday.
It was only released only for online use, it was not intended for TV nor Print.
I guess we just say – “Lesson learned” – we hope!
Ciao for now @kootenayborn
