Facebook or Twitter for 2012? Which is better?
Try and think of a topic in social networking that has been batted around more than this one. So many opinions and so much passion on a discussion that really is difficult to answer when there is no context placed around the question. It is a question that was posed indirectly on New Years Eve, as folks debated whether we even really needed either ( I draw the line there though, as of course we “need” both platforms, as well as many others 🙂 )
Which is better? A Ferrari or a Lexus? Depends on what you want to do with your vehicle and what you want to spend on it I guess. Both will get you “a to b” and will perform the same basic functions, however, without getting into all of the differences, as I am sure you get what I am saying, there are hundreds of reasons for buying either and many more in not buying either. Hundreds of reasons based on hundreds of buying decisions that are pretty much all subjective (except maybe budget which would be pretty clearly defined in this example). The answer would be really based on you, your values, your income, your lifestyle, your peers, your affinity for cars, etc….
I don’t think the “which is better” is really a fair question with respect to Facebook vs Twitter either, just as it is not with the Ferrari and the Lexus. It really depends on who you are trying to talk to, and maybe the reach of your communication. What I mean by that is in the following paragraphs, this is is how I determine which is “better”.
If I am trying to converse with friends and family, and maybe a few that are a little more removed than that, then it would be my Facebook account, not my group account, but my personal Facebook ccount. My Facebook account is comprised of many people, but they are people that I know or have had personal contact with (by personal I mean not just online, although I realize that many would argue that also) and even though they may not be close friends anymore, they are connections that are important to me as many are high school friends that I would have never gotten I touch with, without a medium such as this. They are long lost contacts that Facebook is allowing me to reignite.
If I am looking to broaden my scope and reach out into areas of discussion with people that I would never be in situations to meet, then it is all Twitter.
Maybe the easiest way to say it, or describe it, is as follows; if I want to talk and engage with family and friends on a more personal and intimate level, then Facebook is it.
If I want to talk to the world about anything that I can think of, and some things that I would have never thought of, with people I would probably never have met and maybe never meet, then it is for sure all about Twitter. Twitter is my window to the world – literally!
So for 2012, it is pretty clear for me. I know which is best and which I will use more of…
Both of them.
They serve different purposes for me.
However, I will say this. As I continue to try and broaden my base of influence within marketing and the consumer packaged goods arena for London Drugs, and for Kenny Vannucci, it will be more Twitter. When I am trying to hang on to may past, my youth, my friends of old, and my friends of new, it will be most likely be Facebook.
I consider my Facebook friends really and truly that, friends. Not to say that I don’t consider many of my Twitter contacts friends (online friends); it is just easier and more comfortable to follow and be followed that it is to be friends (although many of my Twitter friends probably know about as much of me as my Facebook friends as I am on Twitter a tonne). My Facebook friends are chosen by me and I am chosen by them, it is not as loose as Twitter. That is neither good, nor bad, it is just what it is.
I guess the whole point of this is to really state that neither platform is better or worse for me, they are just different, and I enjoy both of them, just for different purposes and reasons.
Enjoy 2012 everyone! Hope it turns out to be everything you want and are dreaming of and let’s try and stay connected using any or all of the social networking mediums.
Happy New Year.
Ciao for now @kootenayborn
